The city of Alkmaar is located in the province of North-Holland and has about 100,000 inhabitants.
Alkmaar became officially a city in the year 1254 when it was granted city rights. In 1573 Alkmaar was the first city in Holland to be freed from the Spanish occupier. The city is also famous for its cheese market that is been hold between April and October every year.
