Leiden is located in the western part of Holland in the province of South-Holland (in Dutch: Zuid-Holland).
Leiden received its city rights in the year 1266. At the end of the fifteenth century the weaving products of Leiden were very important. Leiden played an important role in the Eighty Years' War. The city was liberated from the Spaniards in 1574 by cutting the dikes. In 1575 the University of Leiden was founded by William I of Orange Nassau.
