Groningen is located in the nothern part of Holland in the province of Groningen.
The city received its city rights in the 9th century. Groningen is the most important city in the north of Holland, and the city is known for its Martini church (318 ft), one of Holland's highest church towers. The church is located at the Grote Markt. The city houses a university, the University of Groningen.
