Haarlem is located in the western part of Holland in the province of North-Holland (Noord-Holland).
The city received its city rights in the year 1245 by Count Willem II. In the fourteenth century Haarlem was a large and important city. It was the largest city Holland after the city of Dordrecht. In the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century linen from Haarlem became world famous and Haarlem flourished, just like the rest of Holland.
