Map HaarlemHaarlem is located in the western part of Holland in the province of North-Holland (in Dutch: Noord-Holland). The oldest records in which the city is mentioned date from the eight century. Lateron, in the twelfth century, Haarlem became a fortified town, and about a century later the town recieved it's city rights by the Count Willem the Second. In the 16th century the city had a large immigration of Flemish and French people, a lot of them experienced in linen and silk. Haarlem's inhabitants doubled in this period within 50 years. Haarlem linen became world famous and Haarlem became a prosperous city, just like the rest of The Netherlands, the Dutch Golden Age had started.
